In the face of such hatred and determination, it is difficult to know how best to repsond, even five years later. It is an open dialog we should continually have, but one that has become increasingly polarized and fraught with acrimony and accusation:

What is the right balance between insuring security and preserving civil liberties?

Thomas Paine wrote in a differant of individual rights and what a free society should look like. What do we want America to look like in the 21st century? Would Tom Paine recognize it?
