On the Role of Government

“That government is best which governs least.”

Never more succinctly does Thomas Paine put forth his belief in the limitations of government.

What would Paine think in today’s world, with the debate over a constitutional amendment on gay marriage, or the monitoring of electronic communications, or what the role of government should be regarding issues like climate change, the recent veto of funding for stem cell research, or any number of vexing problems facing us two centuries after Paine wrote?

Perhaps some of these issues require government oversight and intervention, and perhaps some others do not.

How do we maintain a balance of an effective government that “governs least?”
